IELTS Letter Writing Tips –
Some effective tips to score high in IELTS letter writing task.
These tips will help you understand various types of letter, depending on the type how to structure your letter and how to complete the task effectively to achieve the desired score. You will be having 20 minutes to complete this task.
1.Instructions:
This is probably the most common mistake most students commit. Each IELTS letter question contains 3 bullet points that need to be included in your letter. If you fail to address any of these points, it will reflect in your score and you will get lower score.
2.Identify the Type of Letter:
The most important part of your letter-writing task is to identify the type of letter whether it is a formal, semi-formal or informal/personal letter. Entire tone and mood of your letter depends on this question. Define your style and choose appropriate words according to the type of the letter you have been asked to write.
3.Purpose of the Letter:
Think about the purpose of the letter, before you start writing. There are various intentions to write a letter that will influence the style of your letter. Some of the most common contents for IELTS letter writing tasks are:
• Complaint (mostly formal)
• Request (can be any)
• Invitation (mostly personal or semi-formal)
• Explanation (semi-formal or personal)
• Apology (can be any)
• Application (often formal)
• Thanks/Appreciation (can be any)
• Suggestion/Feedback (can be formal or semi-formal)
• Informative (usually personal)
4.Opening of the Letter:
Generally, letter starts with an opening statement that will explain the purpose of writing the letter. The opening statement varies depending on the type of your letter whether it’s formal, semi-formal or personal.
5.Signing Off
There are conventional ways to end letter but based on the purpose and type of the letter you need to refine your closing statement or comment.
6.Structure of the Letter
Your letter has to be organized into paragraphs. It is a vital part of any writing task and you will be judged on your ability to use an effective paragraphing.
7.Grammar and Vocabulary: Formal and informal

8.Spelling and Punctuation

9.Stay on Topic:
Going off topic is equal to commit a suicide. In order to complete your letter within the timeframe of 20 minutes or less, it is mandatory to stick to the point. The General IELTS Task 1 does require a little bit of imagination and story telling, but it should not be so complicated that you go off topic and run short of time.
10.Plan Your Letter
Plan a letter? What?? Yes, plan your letter. You may not bother to plan anything in your life, but when it comes to IELTS some planning is essential. You should spend at least 3 to 4 minutes planning your letter. It’s worth investing time in identifying the type, covering all the points, defining appropriate style of writing etc. Consider following points for a well-planned letter:
• Read the instructions and bullet points carefully
• Identify the type and purpose of the letter
• Decide opening statement and the closure of your letter
• Think about how many paragraphs you will include and where to cover each point
• Brainstorm about the grammar and vocabulary that suits your letter the best
• Plan the content of each body paragraph
• Start writing
